The Bottle to Top Them All

Any list of the greatest wines of Italy must include Poggio di Sotto.

Their 2018 Brunello di Montalcino justifies every bit of praise they’ve ever earned.

This bottle was named Wine Enthusiast’s #1 Cellar Selection of the year, beating out Vega Sicilia’s $600+ Unico, which placed at #2. It also boasts 96+ points from Wine Advocate, who says Poggio di Sotto “hits it out of the ballpark,” promising that “your high expectations will be met.”

Poggio di Sotto doesn’t have the long history of some other estates in Brunello, but they’ve been one of the most important names in the region, practically ever since Piero Palmucci purchased his property overlooking the Orcia River valley in 1989.

At a time when many Tuscan producers were rushing to embrace international varieties, Piero devoted his estate solely to Sangiovese. He worked with researchers at the University of Milan to select the ideal biotypes of the grape for his vineyards, which were planted at three different altitudes to help build complexity and manage vintage variation.

In 2011, Piero sold Poggio di Sotto to Claudio Tipa, who has done nothing but build on the estate’s legacy. The farming is still organic—and as Wine Advocate noted, the attention to detail in the cellar has elevated the wines even further. There’s a reason that MICHELIN-three-stars like The French Laundry are able to charge over $800 for Poggio di Sotto’s current-release Brunello—it’s the absolute crème de la crème.

Moderate ruby with garnet edges. The nose is elegantly rich, with dried cranberry, autumn leaves, savory herbs, fresh violets, crushed pebbles, and rosehip. Silky and ethereal on the palate, giving loads of red berry, black plum, rosemary, and wildflowers. Endless length and poise show the true beauty of the region. Poggio di Sotto hits it out the ballpark once again with an extremely elegant interpretation that shows the incredible depth and nuance Sangiovese can achieve, even in an uneven vintage such as this. The certified organic 2018 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a dark ruby hue and mid-weight concentration. Indeed, the wine is lighter and brighter than most, despite Brunello's mandatory five years of aging before its commercial release. The tannins are silky and melt over the palate. Along the way, the wine offers high notes of red cherry, cassis and blue flower. This 38,000-bottle release carries a very high price tag, but your high expectations will be met.

Beautifully detailed, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino delivers pure layers of ripe cherry, raspberry, incense, stony earth, roses, and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied and silky in texture, with ultra-fine tannins, it has a gorgeous energy without edges, with a long arch of ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, herbes de Provence, wet stone, and fresh rose petal. It is incredibly long on the palate, and it almost feels as if the wine never ends. This will be a stunning wine to drink 2026-2046.

Cherries take a star turn on the palate, with strawberries and raspberries playing crucial supporting roles, while a tension between astringent orange and creamy mocha emerges on the lengthy finish.
